People Playground on PC
It only exists on PC, so this page covers the download, requirements, and the free-version question.
People Playground is a PC game and nothing else. The only download is on Steam, for Windows and Linux, at $9.99. That makes this page short on options and long on the details people search for: what it needs, whether it's ever free, and how to get mods without the Workshop.
Download People Playground on Steam
Steam is the only official store. There is no mobile version, so any People Playground APK is not the game.
Buy it, install it, done. It's about 1 GB. Steam Cloud saves your contraptions and settings.
System requirements
| Minimum | |
|---|---|
| OS | Windows 7 or later, 64-bit; Ubuntu 18.04 or later |
| CPU | Any dual-core from the last decade |
| GPU | Integrated graphics with OpenGL 3.3 |
| RAM | 4 GB |
| Storage | 1 GB |
It's 2D and light. What slows it down is mods: Beyond Nowhere and the larger weapon packs add hundreds of megabytes of assets and can push load times past a minute on a hard drive. An SSD helps more than a better GPU.
Is there a free People Playground download?
No official one. The results for "people playground free download" break into:
- SteamUnlocked, SteamRIP and similar repack sites. These are pirated copies. They're usually several versions old, Workshop doesn't work, and the January 2026 malware mod spread partly through repacks that bundled it.
- "Web port" and "HTML" versions. These are the pirated build wrapped in a browser emulator. They run badly and can't save.
- Steam Family Sharing. This one is legitimate: if a friend or family member owns it, they can share their library with your Steam account.
The game is $9.99 and goes to $6.99 in most Steam sales. That is the legal route.
Linux and Steam Deck
There is a native Linux build. On Steam Deck it runs well and is rated Playable; the trackpad works as a mouse and the right stick can be mapped to cursor movement. Mods work the same.

Workshop mods without Steam (SteamCMD)
People ask about SteamCMD because it can download Workshop items on their own, which is useful for pirated copies and also for pulling a mod that's been delisted. On a legitimate copy you don't need it; subscribe in the client. If you're using it anyway: workshop_download_item 1118200 <item id> after logging in, then move the folder into the game's Mods directory. Steam has been tightening anonymous Workshop downloads through 2026, so expect this to stop working for some items.
Common questions
Is People Playground on Epic Games or GOG?
No. Steam only.
Does it work on Mac?
Not officially. It runs under CrossOver on Apple Silicon for most people.
Can I run it on a Chromebook?
Only Chromebooks that support Linux apps and Steam, which is a short list. The Linux build works on those.
