People Playground
The PC ragdoll sandbox with the deepest systems in the genre, and a mod scene that recently had a very bad month.
What People Playground is
People Playground is a 2D sandbox where you drop ragdoll humans into a room and do things to them. That description undersells it. Under the stick-figure art is a simulation with electricity, wiring, temperature, chemistry, liquids and gravity manipulation. You can build a working circuit, wire a generator to a chair, or spawn a black hole and watch the room fold into it. It is the game Melon Sandbox and GoreBox borrowed their ideas from.
It was made by one developer, mestiez, under the name Studio Minus, and it has been on Steam since 2019. It is 2D, runs on almost anything, and is mouse-driven.
Is People Playground free?
No. It costs $9.99 on Steam and it goes on sale a few times a year. There is no free version, no browser version and no mobile version. The pages ranking for "people playground free", "unblocked", "online" or "web port" are running one of three things: a different game with a similar name, an old cracked build inside a browser emulator, or nothing at all behind a survey wall. The PC page covers the real download and what the game needs to run.
Steam is the only official store. There is no mobile version, so any People Playground APK is not the game.
Mods and the Workshop
Mods are most of the game's life. The Steam Workshop has weapon packs (the Realistic Weapon Pack is the most subscribed), active human mods that give ragdolls behaviour, surgery mods, FPS mods, and total conversions.
The biggest of those right now is Beyond Nowhere by Batrix Studios: a post-collapse world with 29 characters and more than 100 abilities, built on top of Human Tiers Reforged, which it requires. It has around 13,000 ratings and its own wiki. If you see "beyond nowhere people playground" everywhere, that's why.
What happened in January 2026
A Workshop mod was found that deleted players' Contraptions folders and other game files, then copied itself into other installed mods to keep spreading. mestiez took the Workshop offline, shipped a patch that blocks the exploit, and asked players to verify game files, clear their local mods folder and unsubscribe from anything uploaded after 30 January. The Workshop came back once Steam had cleaned it up. If you had the game installed during that window and haven't verified files since, do it now: Steam → Properties → Installed Files → Verify.
Two ongoing consequences: the game now warns about mods that touch the file system, and "people playground mods not compiling" errors spiked afterwards because older mods relied on calls that the patch restricted. Updating the mod, or removing it if it's abandoned, is the fix.
Installing mods
- Steam Workshop → People Playground → Subscribe.
- Launch the game. Subscribed mods appear in the Mods menu; enable them there.
- Manual mods (zip files from ModsLab or Discord) go in the game's
Modsfolder under the Steam install directory. Each mod is its own folder with a mod.json in it.
Controls people search for
- How to flip people: hold the ragdoll, press F to mirror it. Same key flips items.
- Rotate: R and T, or scroll while holding.
- Freeze: select and press F while it's in place, or right-click → Freeze.
- Black hole: spawn the Gravity Chamber or the Wormhole from the Physics category. Volume Unclamped is a mod that removes the size limit.
- Slow motion: spacebar pauses; the time slider is bottom left.
Updates and "is it abandoned"
Update pace slowed through 2024 and 2025 while mestiez worked on other projects, which is where the "why did People Playground stop updating" searches come from. It isn't abandoned: February 2026 saw three patches in a month, mostly around the Workshop incident, and the changelog is public on GitHub. There is no People Playground 2 announced.
